Architectural trim and molding is where craftsmanship is most visible — and most revealing. A perfectly mitered corner, a crown molding that runs level across a room with an out-of-plumb ceiling, a wainscot that aligns precisely at every door and window casing: these details separate excellent finish carpentry from competent finish carpentry. Zsolt Matisz learned these distinctions in his father's Hungarian woodshop, and that precision defines every trim project MM Home Improvements undertakes.

Main Line homes built before World War II are particularly rich in original millwork — intricate crown profiles, elaborate door surrounds, picture rail molding, wainscoting in hallways, and built-in bookcases and cabinetry that were standard in homes of that era. When this original millwork is damaged, missing, or needs extension into renovated spaces, MM specializes in matching existing profiles exactly — sourcing custom milled profiles or hand-working existing millwork stock to replicate what is there.

How We Approach Trim & Molding

For homeowners adding trim details to rooms that have none — or upgrading to a higher architectural level — we design and install: crown molding (simple to elaborate multi-piece profiles), wainscoting (board-and-batten, raised panel, beadboard), coffered and tray ceilings, built-in bookshelves and entertainment centers, window seats, and custom cabinetry. We present profile and design options in context so you can see how the result will look before any material is ordered.

Our trim work integrates with your painting and finish choices from the start. We anticipate paint caulk lines, prime all materials before installation, and coordinate with your painter so that the joint between trim and wall is invisible. We do not assume someone else will make our work look good — we set up for success from the first cut.

Our Trim & Molding Process

How It Works

1

Design consultation and profile selection.

We assess the room, review your existing trim (if any), and discuss profile options and design intent. For custom profiles, we create samples for your approval before ordering.

2

Material procurement and custom milling.

We source lumber, pre-primed MDF stock, and any custom-milled profiles required. All materials are acclimated at the site before installation.

3

Installation.

We install from the top down: ceiling-level work first (crown, coffered), then vertical elements (wainscoting, panel molding), then base molding. Every piece is back-primed before installation.

4

Filling and preparation.

All nail holes filled, all joints caulked, any irregularities addressed. We prepare the trim for finish painting to the highest standard.

5

Inspection and touchup.

We walk the room with you, address any observations, and prepare a punch list for the painter so nothing is missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you match original trim profiles in our older Main Line home?
Yes. Profile matching in historic homes is one of our specialties. We use a profile gauge to capture the existing molding's cross-section, then either source matching profiles from specialty millwork suppliers or have custom profiles ground to match. For very elaborate Victorian profiles, we sometimes have short runs custom-milled by a local millwork shop we work with regularly. The goal is a result that is indistinguishable from the original.
How do you handle rooms with out-of-plumb walls and uneven ceilings?
Out-of-plumb and out-of-level conditions are the norm in pre-war Main Line homes, not the exception. We address these with scribing, back-cutting, and gradual planing rather than forcing perfectly straight material against a wavy surface. Crown molding in older homes sometimes requires floating the crown slightly off the ceiling or wall in some locations — which requires experience and patience to do invisibly. This is where Zsolt's training pays off directly.
What is the difference between board-and-batten, raised panel, and beadboard wainscoting?
Board-and-batten is a craftsman-style wainscot with vertical boards capped by horizontal rails — clean and farmhouse-influenced. Raised panel wainscoting features recessed or raised geometric panels within a rail-and-stile framework — traditional and formal, common in pre-war colonials. Beadboard uses narrow grooved panels and has a colonial or coastal character. We help you select the right profile for your home's architectural style during the design consultation.
