Custom carpentry is the highest expression of what MM Home Improvements does — one-of-a-kind pieces designed for your specific space and built to a standard that makes them permanent features of your home rather than furniture. Zsolt Matisz has been working in wood since he was a child in his father's Hungarian woodshop, and that heritage informs every built-in bookcase, entertainment center, and mudroom storage system we build.

Our custom carpentry projects begin with a design conversation in your space. We do not sell from a catalog — we design from your room's dimensions, your storage needs, your architectural context, and your aesthetic preferences. A Victorian Narberth home warrants a different built-in library than a Wayne colonial, and we approach each differently.

How We Approach Custom Carpentry

We work with a preferred millwork shop for face frames, drawer boxes, and panel components, but assemble, fit, and install everything ourselves. This means we can achieve the exacting fit that a large millwork shop rarely achieves in field installation — scribing cabinets to irregular walls, fitting around architectural details, and making the new piece feel like it was always part of the house.

Popular custom carpentry projects in Main Line homes include: built-in bookshelves flanking a fireplace (the classic application), entertainment centers with integrated cable management, mudroom systems with cubbies, benches, and hooks, window seats with storage drawers below, home office built-ins with integrated desk surfaces, and custom butler's pantry cabinetry extending an existing kitchen.

Our Custom Carpentry Process

How It Works

1

Design consultation in your space.

We measure the room, discuss your storage and aesthetic goals, and sketch preliminary design concepts showing layout, proportions, and details.

2

Design development and approval.

We produce detailed shop drawings with dimensions and material specifications. You approve the design before any material is cut.

3

Fabrication.

Cabinet boxes, face frames, drawers, and shelving are fabricated in our preferred millwork shop to our specifications.

4

Site preparation and delivery.

We prepare the installation wall — patching any irregularities, installing blocking for attachment points — and receive the millwork delivery.

5

Installation.

We install the built-in system, scribing to walls and floor, setting all components plumb and level, installing doors, drawers, and hardware. We prepare all surfaces for painting or complete the natural wood finish as specified.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a built-in bookcase or entertainment center cost?
A flanking-fireplace built-in bookcase pair with adjustable shelves, upper cabinets, and lower cabinetry typically runs $8,000–$18,000 installed depending on size, detail level, and material specification. A mudroom system with bench, cubbies, and integrated storage for a family of four typically runs $12,000–$22,000. A full home office built-in with desk, upper shelving, and file drawer base typically runs $10,000–$20,000. These are custom-built pieces — not IKEA-based installations.
Can you match our existing built-ins or cabinetry profile?
Yes. Profile matching is one of the most common requests we receive — extending an existing library built-in into an adjacent room, adding a matching hutch over an existing buffet, or building new entertainment center components to match the existing kitchen cabinet style. We study the existing cabinetry door profile, face frame dimensions, and molding details, and replicate them precisely in the new work.
Do you do custom furniture as well as built-ins?
We focus primarily on built-in and architectural carpentry rather than free-standing furniture. Our specialty is the intersection of architecture and woodworking — pieces that are integral to the room's character. For custom free-standing furniture, we can recommend talented local woodworkers whose work complements our built-in installations beautifully. This keeps our focus where our craftsmanship is strongest.
How long does a custom built-in carpentry project take from design to installation?
Timeline depends on the scope and complexity of the project. A single flanking-fireplace bookcase pair typically runs four to six weeks from design approval to installed — two weeks for shop drawings and approval, two to three weeks for fabrication, and two to three days on-site for installation. Larger projects like full home office built-ins or complete mudroom systems run six to ten weeks. We schedule fabrication around your availability and minimize on-site disruption. All timeline commitments are included in your written proposal before any work begins.
