A door is one of the most frequently touched components of your home, and a door that hangs perfectly — operates smoothly, seals completely, and latches effortlessly — is the product of careful carpentry. MM Home Improvements installs and replaces interior and exterior doors with the same precision standard we apply to every element of a renovation project.

For exterior entry doors, the stakes are particularly high. Proper installation affects weatherproofing, energy efficiency, security, and the first impression your home makes. We install pre-hung solid wood and fiberglass entry doors with appropriate weatherstripping, threshold, and sill pan flashing to prevent water infiltration — a detail commonly skipped by less experienced contractors and the source of most exterior door failures.

How We Approach Door Installation

Interior doors — French doors, pocket doors, barn doors, panel doors, and bifold configurations — require precise rough opening preparation and careful shimming and adjustment. We pre-hang all interior doors from scratch where necessary, ensuring the reveal is even on all three sides and the door swings and latches without effort. We install casing and trim to match your existing profiles exactly.

On the Main Line, many pre-war homes have original solid wood doors of superior quality that simply need restoration rather than replacement. We assess each door's condition, repair splits and joint failures where possible, strip and refinish painted doors that have accumulated too many layers, and adjust hinges and strikes that have shifted over decades of settling. Restoration is often the right choice for original solid wood doors.

Our Door Installation Process

How It Works

1

Assessment and specification.

We evaluate the existing rough opening (or plan a new one), measure the door location, and specify the door unit, hardware, and casing profile. For pocket doors, we assess the wall cavity and determine the best installation approach.

2

Rough opening preparation.

We modify or frame the rough opening to the correct dimensions for the door unit. For exterior doors, we install sill pan flashing and inspect for any existing water damage before the new door arrives.

3

Door installation and adjustment.

We install the door unit, shim to level and plumb, adjust the strike and latch for smooth operation, and verify the door seals completely around the perimeter.

4

Trim and casing installation.

We install casing on both sides of the door, matching your existing profiles. All nail holes are filled, joints are caulked, and the installation is prepared for painting.

5

Hardware installation and final adjustment.

We install locksets, hinges (if not pre-installed), door stops, and weatherstripping. We make a final pass adjustment to ensure smooth operation before final inspection with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install pocket doors in an existing wall?
Pocket doors in existing walls are one of the more challenging interior door installations — the wall cavity must be free of plumbing, electrical, and structural elements, and the pocket frame must be installed precisely for the door to slide without binding. We assess the wall with an inspection camera before committing to a pocket door installation. In many Main Line homes, the wall cavity is clear enough for a pocket door to be installed without disturbing adjacent rooms' finishes.
Should we replace or restore our original solid wood doors?
Original solid wood doors in pre-war homes are almost always worth restoring rather than replacing. Pre-war solid wood doors are typically made from old-growth fir or pine with tighter grain than any new-growth lumber available today — they are dimensionally stable, heavy, and of superior quality. We can re-hang, re-plane, strip, refinish, and restore original doors to excellent condition. The cost of restoration is usually lower than a quality replacement, and the result preserves the character of the home.
How do you match our existing door casing profile?
We take a profile gauge reading of your existing casing and source matching stock from our suppliers. Most historic Main Line profiles — colonial stop, back band, and craft-style casings — are available from specialty millwork suppliers. For very unusual profiles, we have short runs custom-milled. The goal is that new door casings are indistinguishable from the existing ones in the adjacent hallway.
